My thesis serves as an observation of the checks and balances I witnessed growing up regarding emotional and blunt perceptions. My twin sister, Erin, has autism and therefore views much of the world in a more analytical fashion. While I have always found myself seeing the gray in each situation, she tends to only see the black and white.
As I entered my final year, I began to study at the cadaver labs in Roanoke where an analytical and detached way of thinking was necessary to complete the work.
This experience made me incredibly interested in the dynamics between emotional connection and emotional detachment. In my work I am exploring this contrast through the study of anatomy as I find myself moving back and forth between the emotional detachment necessary for physically analyzing the body and the emotional attachment that starts to come from piecing together the anatomy until the figure feels like something personal. My studies range from oil paintings, hand drawn studies, and prints of my Creative Technology renderings as I express the balance between analytical or distant approaches to personal and emotional results.
